Free UK moving guide
Your first week in a new home
Once the boxes are inside, these are the practical jobs worth prioritising during the first week.
Download the free 3-page checklistConfirm the official basics
- Confirm your exact local authority using the official postcode-based service.
- Make sure the appropriate utility providers have your opening readings and move date.
- Check council-tax arrangements and understand local waste/recycling collections.
- Update priority official records and important financial providers.
Make the property safe and understandable
- Know where the stopcock, electricity consumer unit and heating controls are.
- Test alarms and replace batteries if needed.
- Check external doors, accessible windows and locks.
- Understand parking permits, building access or communal arrangements if they apply.
Set up local essentials
- Arrange broadband or resolve any installation issues.
- Identify local GP, pharmacy, supermarket, fuel/charging and public transport options you may need.
- Register for school, childcare or local services where appropriate.
- Keep a small list of defects or questions rather than trying to remember them.
Keep the evidence
Do not delete your moving-day meter photographs, handover messages, inventories or important receipts immediately. Keeping a simple folder for the move makes later queries much easier to resolve.
