Moving day checklist
The day is easier when you concentrate on evidence, access and essentials rather than trying to finish every piece of admin.

- Take clear time-stamped photographs of electricity, gas and water meter readings where applicable.
- Check every room, cupboard, loft, garage, shed and outside storage area.
- Photograph the condition of the property if that may be useful for your records.
- Make sure windows are closed and agree the key-handover process.
- Keep phones, chargers, medication, documents and valuables with you.
When you arrive
- Record the new meter readings before normal household use begins.
- Check how many keys you have and identify what each key opens.
- Find the water stopcock, consumer unit/fuse box and heating controls.
- Test smoke alarms and carbon-monoxide alarms where fitted.
- Check for urgent damage, leaks or security problems before unpacking extensively.
Your first-night box
- Kettle, mugs, drinks and basic food.
- Toilet roll, soap, towels and cleaning supplies.
- Medication and a basic first-aid kit.
- Chargers, torch, extension lead and simple tools.
- Bedding, nightwear and a change of clothes.
Do not rush these jobs
You do not need to complete every address change on moving day. Protect your meter evidence, keys, documents and personal safety first. Then work through the remaining admin methodically over the next few days.
